Trieste
Trieste, the capital of the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, is wedged between the mountains and the sea. lt still shows the signs of its roman origins and its medieval past: the roman basilica, the fortress and the cathedral with valuable mosaics.
The recent past of the city, the asburgic tradition and the legendary cosmopolitanism are manifest in the city centre, where the roads are flanked by elegant neoclassical buildings, art nouveau monuments and mighty churches of different religions.
Only a few minutes by bus from the centre there is the romantic and fabulous castle of Miramare, encircled by luxuriant gardens. The sea in front of the castle has become a Marine Nature Reserve managed by WWF.
In the neighbourhood of Trieste you can also admire the Giant Cave, the largest tourist cave in the world, and Muggia, the smal istrian city with the ruins of ancient medieval walls.
